Rosie's Therapy Muscular Dystrophy UB School of Medicine

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is the most common genetic disease of boys.  There is no known therapy or cure.  In 1984 Sachs Lab, University at Buffalo's School of Medicine, Dr. Frederick Sachs, UB Distinguished Professor of Biophysics, Department of Physiology and Biophysics, and his colleagues, have discovered mechanosensitive ion channels, pores in the cell membrane that open under mechanical stress.  When the genetic defects of dystrophy break down reinforcement of the cell membrane, these channels become activated and let calcium leak into the cell causing the muscles to atrophy.  This is what causes muscular dystrophy.

Sachs Lab made the discovery of the channels when there were no drugs known to affect those channels.  Taking a wild chance on Nature's chemical libraries, they examined venoms from scorpions, centipedes and spiders and in a tarantula venom, they discovered a drug that did work. The drug turned out to be a small, non-toxic, protein.  Keep in mind, everything in a venom is not poisonous.  The lab tested the protein (known as GsMTx4) on isolated dystrophic muscle since dystrophin makes a reinforcing network under the cell membrane, and its loss transfers stress to the membrane. This increased stress turns on the channels producing the calcium leak.

GsMTx4 caused the muscle less likely to be damaged from stress. In collaboration with Dr. Eric Hoffman of the Wellstone Institute for Muscular Dystrophy in Washington, Sachs Lab tested GsMTx4, and after a month of treatment there were no significant side effects.

Sachs Lab is close to having a therapy for muscular dystrophy.

To handle commercialization of GsMtx4 after preclinical testing, Sachs Lab formed Rose Pharmaceuticals, a research-based biotech drug company founded with the specific goal of treating muscular dystrophy.  Rose Pharmaceuticals is located in Buffalo and started by Drs. Fred Sachs, Phil Gottlieb and Tom Suchyna and Mr. Jeff Harvey, and Rosie, the tarantula.
Sachs Lab has found a therapy for muscular dystrophy.  There is no known therapy or medication for this condition.  Sachs Lab and Rose Pharmaceuticals is in need of funding and support in order for this therapy to pass FDA Regulation for pre -clinical testing.  The least amount needed is 1.5 million dollars.  Dr. Frederich Sachs speaks of Rosie's Therapy on my radio show, This is NOT The Apple and information can be found at Sachs Lab at UB School of Medicine and Facebook HERE under: Rosie's Therapy for Muscular Dystrophy.

You can help the research.  Donate (tax deductible) to the lab by sending whatever amount you feel is appropriate for "unrestricted research funds" to:    Rosie's Therapy for Muscular Dystophy:    Grammostola Spatulata Fund UB Foundation P.O. Box 900 Buffalo, NY 14226.

When this therapy passes FDA regulations and pre-clinical testing, not only will there be a therapy for muscular dystrophy, but this medication GsMTx4, with no known side effects, will also be able to treat other conditions that affect muscle walls such as various heart conditions and everyday chronic and acute pain.   Right now, the only medications available for such conditions, including muscular dystrophy have severe side effects and are addictive.

Please join Sachs Lab, Rose Pharmaceuticals and the UB School of Medicine (all Buffalo based entities), in passing a medication that can literally help millions of people. Currently, everyone at Sachs Lab is funding this endeavor out of their own pockets.

Rose Pharmaceuticals has been featured in The UB Reporter,  Technology Transfer Tactics, Innovations Report.com, Fox News National, Buffalo State News, Futurity.org Health & Medicine, and Channel 2 WGRZ. on National News.

The drug is in preclinical trials at the Wellstone Institute in Washington DC.  There is no toxicity.  There are no known side effects.  There are no known addictive properties.  There is no cure or therapy.

Until now.

You can help the research.  Donate.

and you shall possess the origin of all poems,
You shall possess the good of the earth and sun,
there are millions of suns left.
You shall no longer take things at second or third hand
nor look through the eyes of the dead,
nor feed on the spectres in books,
You shall not look through my eyes either, nor take things from me,
You shall listen to all sides and filter them from yourself."

Benefit For Jon Croom: Buffalo Firefighter: Pearl Street April 11

On August 24th, 2009, two of Buffalo’s Bravest Firefighters attempted to save the lives of those they thought were in danger. It was a day of great pride, but also of incredible sorrow.

Those who knew Jon Croom, knew a man of strength, integrity and purpose. He was a brother, a father, a son, our friend. Jon left behind a daughter, not yet 3 yrs old, and a new son, born only 2 weeks after his death. He never even held this child. It is for this reason that we, Jon’s friends, have come together to lend a hand to what Jon started.  We are earnestly working together to create a college fund for each of his children, Johanna and Jonathan, so that they can experience the same zeal for life that Jon himself enjoyed.

A benefit in honor of Jon’s life and memory will be held April 11th, 2010, at Pearl Street Brewery.  14 bands, a 50/50 raffle and a basket auction are featured. All of the bands have donated their time, and Pearl Street has graciously donated the space.  100% of the proceeds will go directly to the trust funds in place for the children of Jonathan Croom.

“This gift will show Jon’s kids how much he meant to his friends, and how much this community appreciates the sacrifice he and Lt. McCarthy made for us,” said Jason Hall, owner of Sessions Studio in Black Rock, who graduated with Croom from the Buffalo Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts.

The organizers of this event are seeking in-kind donations to enhance the Basket Auction the day of the event. We are hopeful that you will see the great opportunity to commit, as a community; to the children of our neighborhood Hero, and that you would consider helping us reach our goal.

For more information, Jay Hall, Sessions Video (716) 447-1508, purchase tickets online HERE and HERE.  Please see event on FaceBook.

Bunny Up For Gabrielle Bouliane: Feb 14 Nietzsche's

On February 14th, 2010 at Nietzsche's  248 Allen Street downtown Buffalo from 2pm - 11pm, we are Bunnying-Up on Valentine's Day to celebrate the beautiful life of our fabulous friend, Gabrielle Bouliane.  This fundraising party will be the perfect way to honor L*O*V*E, Gabby style!

Gabrielle left this world end of January 2010 due to a rare form of cancer.  This benefit is a celebration of her life.  Gabrielle was a forerunner in supporting the arts, music and literary scene in Buffalo and WNY, bringing National and Global exposure to artists, musicians and this fine city.  Gabrielle was a filmmaker, poet, writer, began the Nickel City Poetry Slam and covered many local and national musicians.  All funds from Feb 14, will go directly to Gabrielle's family. A new fund will be announced in Gabrielle's honor to assist an emerging leader in cancer survival or one wishing to pursue the field of arts.

Musicians donating their time include:  The Irving Klaws, Blue Rocket Trio, The Steam Donkeys, Geno McManus, Joe Rozler,  John Lombardo, Shaky Stage, Emile Latimer, Noa Bursie, Kilissa Cissoko, John & Mary (John Lombardo and Mary Ramsey of 10,000 Maniacs), and a special appearance by Scott Carpenter and Fleuron Rouge Bellydance Troupe and more TBA.  Poetry by:  Patricia Smith, Rachel McKibbens, Jacob Rakovan and more TBA.

The donation is a minimum of $5 (at the door) - to $100, as much as you are able to give. We need to be together in tribute to the joy and love that was Gabby's spirit.  If there were not music, dancing, drinking, kissing, poetry and smiling, then we would not be honoring Gabrielle respectfully.

Gabrielle was a supernova and loved by all that knew her.  Her last public performance was in Austin Texas at the Austin Poetry Slam.  View her performance on You Tube, "Gabrielle Bouliane: Austin Poetry Slam", filmed by Eirik Ott and the Feb 14 event is on facebook.  Just search: Bunny Up For Gabrielle.

To volunteer or be a part of the festivities, please contact Rachel, Molly or Colleen at: bunnyupforgabrielle@gmail.com, if you are unable to attend yet still wish to donate to the fund and her family or you are out of state; do this via PayPal at the email above.

Celebrate the life of one extremely selfless woman who never gave a second thought about celebrating each and every one of us.  In the very least we owe her no less than what she has coordinated in the past which is one of the biggest parties we can muster - Buffalo style.

Donate, attend, volunteer and contact Molly, Rachel and Colleen above.  Most importantly, share her work, keep her dreams in motion, and live your own dream now, not tomorrow or  ten years from now, but right this minute. Life is far too short too waste.  Gabrielle would have loved that.

Please pass this on to anyone who may like to attend, it is open to everyone.

“Emotional Effusion”- Drawings and Paintings by Chuck Tingley

On February 5th, 2010, from 6-11pm, 464 Gallery on Amherst Street announces the first solo show from local emerging artist Chuck Tingley.  The opening reception will feature dozens of new works from the artist. Complimentary food wine and beer will be available until it runs out. Free parking is available. This event is free and open to the public.

“My series, Emotional Effusion, is an exploration of an unrestrained outpouring of feelings, thoughts, and behavior. My paintings go beyond the skin to evoke certain emotions. Through paint, I explore the physical characteristics of an individual and dig deeper to get to and express one's core emotion. The outcome is a realistic approach to the form, surrounded by an abstraction of colors. I want the viewer to experience these raw feelings, right down to the physiological changes.” –Chuck Tingley, artist

Born and raised in Buffalo, NY, Chuck Tingley is a promising young talent currently working towards his BFA in painting at Buffalo State College. Tingley has been gaining attention on the strength of his unique and emotionally profound style of artwork. He explores the human figure and its correlation to emotion, taking a single moment in time and abstracting the feeling that comes with it.

The exhibition is an opportunity to introduce this emerging artist’s new line of work, and also gives each and every viewer the chance to indulge in a moment of self-reflection. For more information on Chuck Tingley HERE.

464 Art Gallery and Retail is a multipurpose space where local and emerging artists can come to share their work, shape and sharpen their artistic skill set. "The Buffalo Shuffle"- Defining the Buffalo Sound Dec 28th 8pm

Like many other aspects of the Queen City, Buffalo has always been under-appreciated as a music city. To a certain extent, it can’t be helped. The nerve centers of the music industry are elsewhere, including New York City, Los Angeles, and Nashville. And then there’s the Buffalo Mentality; that secondary market syndrome that contends that something or someone from out of town is better than something or someone from here.

“The Buffalo Shuffle” every Monday night at The Tralf Music Hall will showcase the development and foundation of the Buffalo style of traditional rhythm and blues. We welcome musicians young and old to take part in the ongoing development of the Buffalo Sound. The house band each Monday will be featuring local Buffalo Musicians Doug Yeomans, Mick Hayes, Pete Holquin, Jim Ehinger, Steve Sadoff, and Al Monti with special guest musicians weekly. (More detailed information on individual musicians below)

Fifty some odd years ago, a Rock and Roll, boogie woogie blues style band called Stan and the Ravens started playing the local bar circuit with a sound influenced by the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and Ray Charles . Many local musicians worked with the pianist and band leader, Stan Szelest, following his pounding left hand. When Stan and the Ravens broke up, bassist Tommy Calandra and drummer Gary Mallaber joined a band called The Rising Sons with vocalist Tony Galla, guitarist John Weitz, and pianist/keyboardist Jimmy Calire. This line up became Raven.

Many Musicians have followed in the footsteps of these players, all recognizing the feel, the sound, and the energy that is The Buffalo Sound. Sometimes referred to as the Buffalo Shuffle, the drum beat is a shuffle best described by drummer Gary Mallaber:   “If you boil a shuffle down to something you go to a Jimmy Reed record.  That’s what I go to, or I go to the song Honkey Tonk by The Bill Dogget Quartet. Between those two, anything Jimmy Reed does and  “Honkey Tonk,” you have the absolute shuffle the way it should be. If you play it the right way, that's Buffalo and it’s gusty, earthy.  There’s a geography, it’s true to itself.  There’s a Texas shuffle.  There’s a Chicago shuffle. There’s a New York City way of playing a shuffle. There’s almost a California way of playing the shuffle. This is about rediscovering another identity that is truly our own."

Jim Ehinger - After leaving Buffalo to find his fame and fortune in L.A., Jim Ehinger was the keyboardist of choice to play on albums and/or tours with musical greats such as Coco Montoya, Maria Muldaur, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, Taj Mahal, George Harrison, Steven Stills and Bob Weir.  His rendition of "Rhapsody in Blue" opened the 1984 Olympics in LA and he served as Dennis Quaid's piano coach for the movie "Great Balls of Fire."   His performance on "At This Moment" with Billy Vera and the Beaters helped propel the tune to be a million selling number one record.  Ten more years in NYC saw Jim serve as musical director for B.B. King's Blues Club & Grill and for the Mayer Theater in addition to his playing with other greats.  Jim now can be heard playing in local clubs in the WNY area along with our top blues or R&B talent.

Mick Hayes is the quintessential young front man the music industry was built on.  With his sharp dressed attitude and his “born lucky charm” he is sculpting the sound of contemporary blues and R&B today with powerful vocals and the cleanest home grown skills that pass through all of the blues sub-categories in one night.  Within the last year the multi-award winning guitarist/vocalist/songwriter has opened for: Robin Trower, Dave Mason, Dickey Betts & Pete Frampton.

Mick joined the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame group Only Humen at the ripe age of 20, and it was with this band where he began to learn his trademark showmanship and a 4 gig per-week worth ethic.  As a member of Only Humen, he opened for Marshall Tucker and Molly Hatchet, and contributed on four songs of Only Humen’s release, Slightly Twisted Fiction.  After three years with Only Humen, Mick decided to form the Mick Hayes Band in 2003.  Acclaim arrived quickly in the Trio’s first year, with Mick earning a People’s Choice Award for Best Blues Guitarist, and placing 10th in the USA International Blues Challenge in Memphis.   Mick’s passion and conviction on stage has done more than sold thousands of copies of his CD it’s opened up the eyes of some of the industries most recognized artists.

Doug Yeomans - plays a hybrid style of Rock & Roll, Blues, Country, and Bluegrass.  His career has taken him from New York to California, with stays in Nashville, Toronto, and Austin with many other stops in-between.  He plays concert stages, festivals, clubs, private functions, theater shows, studio dates, guitar clinics and is a teaching artist in schools.  Awards:  2004 Inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame,  2001 & 2003 Best Blues Guitarist by the Buffalo Music Awards,  2003 and 2004 representative of the Blues Society of Western New York in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis TN,  2002 and 2003 Listener Awards for Best Acoustic Blues and Best Bluegrass Act,  2001 North American Rock Guitar Champion at the Buffalo-Niagara Guitar Festival,  1990 Best Country Guitarist (Buffalo Music Awards) and in 1988 – 1994 Toured with Award winning Coppercreek Bluegrass Band, Creekbend

As an educator,  Doug Yeomans is an experienced clinician.  He has lead workshops at the  Mayville Bluegrass Festival yearly since 2003; Guitar Center, Tonawanda, NY, Jackson Music, Grand Island, NY, Wellsville Creative Arts Center, Wellsville, NY, Guitar Summit, Jordan Ont,  Melodee Music, Leesburg, VA,  Generations Guitar Society Master Clinician, Bradford, PA   and is facilitator of a popular Bluegrass Guitar Club.  Doug has been a contracted clinician with Young Audiences of Western New  York since 1997, each year sharing his talents and knowledge with thousands  of elementary to high school children.  Workshops include Blues to  Bluegrass, Erie Canal History, Stringmen, and Just Guitar.  Twice chosen as a feature performer on the Robby Takac (Goo Goo Dolls) and University of Buffalo produced television series: Music is Art – Live

Pete Holguin of The Soul Invaders (BMHOF Class of 2006) (now known as The Billy McEwen Band) have been Western New York's leading Rhythm and Blues band for over a decade.  Led by "Buffalo Music Awards" Hall of Fame vocalist Billy McEwen, they punch out a crowd pleasing mix of Classic Blues, Funk, Rock 'n' Roll, R&B and Originals.   Over the years, this award winning band has shared the stage with acts such as Muddy Waters, James Cotton, John Mayall, The Neville Brothers and The Average White Band.  The Billy McEwen Band are guitarists Jay Dzina and Ed Bores, drummer Pete Holguin, bassist Jim Brucato, and Al Monti on saxophone.  All members contribute both lead and background vocals which, when combined with the gritty vocals and aggressive harp playing of Billy McEwen, produce the biggest and most distinctive R&B sound in the Western New York area.

“The Buffalo Shuffle” will commence every Monday night at The Tralf Music Hall at 8pm beginning Monday, December 28, 2009.  Check out The Buffalo Music Hall of Fame and The Tralf Music Hall for more details.

bulletin_banner2.gif

Veterans Art Therapy Program To Help Local Heroes

(BUFFALO, NY) – The Roycroft Campus Corporation has teamed with the Arts in Education Institute of WNY and the Buffalo Vet Center to develop the Veterans Art Therapy Program to help local service members. The program, which was developed to allow veterans to explore their experiences and emotions through multiple art disciplines, will begin after January 1, 2010.

The Veterans Art Program will include sessions in theater, music, and spoken word, combined with painting, video and drawing, taught by certified art therapists and Institute-trained professional Teaching Artists. Designed by the Arts in Education Institute, and outreach specialists from the Buffalo Vet Center, weekly classes will be held at the Institute Center at 121 Humboldt Pkwy, and other locations. This exciting program will allow veterans an opportunity to explore their emotions and experiences through active, team-based participation. This group engagement seeks to create a setting similar to the squad camaraderie familiar to all service members.  Veterans' work will be presented in a gallery exhibit and public performance event at the end of the six-week session.

The not-for-profit Roycroft Campus Corporation, which has undertaken the restoration of the National Historic Landmark Roycroft Campus in East Aurora, will provide artisan support and host the gallery event.

“This is a great opportunity for the Roycroft community to embrace our veterans and help them with their experiences through our artisans,” stated Dan Frontera, Director of Development.  “Any opportunity that we have to give back to our veterans and help them work through their experiences in Iraq, Afghanistan or Vietnam truly embodies the spirit of Roycroft.  We are very proud to partner with the Arts in Education Institute and the VA," he continued.
